A number of buildings in Melbourne's west have been damaged by a severe thunderstorm that swept through the city after the state's hottest day since March.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Melbourne and parts of the state on Monday afternoon.

The State Emergency Service (SES) asked residents in Hobsons Bay and Wyndham to be patient while volunteers worked through a backlog of calls.

SES spokesperson Marc Dorey said they had received 350 calls for assistance in three hours, from when the severe weather warning was issued about 4:00pm (AEDT).

Mr Dorey said the vast majority of the calls were to Melbourne's west, with Altona, Altona Meadows, Hoppers Crossing, Wyndham Vale, Werribee, Tarneit and Truganina being hit particularly hard.

While he said there had been building damage in the storm but "nothing too significant", in Dunnolly, in Central Victoria one family had to be moved after their roof was damaged in the storm.

"A tree has gone through the roof there and they can't stay there tonight, so they have been temporarily relocated," he said.

The warning for Melbourne was cancelled about 7:00pm, after winds of almost 100 kilometres per hour were recorded in Sheoaks, and around 90kph in Avalon and Laverton.

"Severe thunderstorms are no longer affecting the Melbourne area," the bureau said.

"The immediate threat of severe thunderstorms has passed, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings will be issued if necessary."

Temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius were recorded at Avalon on Monday, while the Bureau of Meteorology's Olympic Park observation station showed the mercury hit 35C.

BOM forecaster Rod Dickson said the day did not get as hot as originally forecast.

"There have been parts of the metropolitan area that have warmed up, but … we've fallen short by a couple of degrees thanks to the cloud cover earlier today," he said.

The thunderstorm brought a cool change to the city, with the temperature dropping from 35C at 5:30pm to 23C at 6:40pm.

The cool weather is forecast to continue for the next seven days.

A severe thunderstorm warning remains for the Northern Country, North East, West and South Gippsland and parts of the Central, East Gippsland, Mallee and North Central forecast districts.
